inspiration: janet fish

a bit about janet fish: Janet Fish is a contemporary realist painter and printmaker who was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1938, and raised on the island of Bermuda. Her grandfather, Clark Voorhees, was an American Impressionist painter who inspired Janet. Her father was an art history teacher, and her mother, Florence Whistler Fish, a sculptor and potter. She went to Skowhegan Summer School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, and studied sculpture and printmaking at Smith College in Massachusetts, and graduated from Smith in 1960. She then went on to Yale University School of Art and Architecture in Connecticut, where she received her B.F.A. (Bachelor of Fine Arts) and M.F.A. (Master of Fine Arts) degrees in 1963. (She was one of the first women artists to receive her MFA from Yale.)

i LOVE the way she painted glass. i love it so much, it makes me give it a shot myself. i'm nowhere near as awesome as she is, but i still have fun doing it :)

i did this one at my kitchen table. painting glass is still a little bit of a mystery to me. the two little vases i thought are alright, but the larger one in the back bugs me a bit. once i've scanned it in, i have the chance to see it much larger on my computer screen. sometimes i want to go back and change things, but i don't. i think that once it's scanned in.. that's it. maybe i could go back and revisit the items i've painted at a later date, but i don't want to tinker with the ones i'd previously though of as "finished". i have another date with that large cobalt vase in the future...

koi watercolor paints, aquarelle watercolor pencils with koi waterbrushes, on moleskine watercolor paper.

catch up

i didn't draw much last week. august had crept up on me, and that first week was not a happy time week. i don't think i need to comment much more on that. i hate august so much.

back to the art.. eh?

late at night, garcia likes to walk around meowing and carrying these mice around the house. you can usually hear him rustling around until he finds a mouse in the dark, then he walks around for about an hour.. meows all muffled. his final destination is my bed. it is not at all unusual for me to find several of these mice tangled in my sheets in the morning. when i get up, i take them with me and usually toss them somewhere else in the house for him to hunt again. i found it difficult to translate the ragged condition these things are in from real life to paper. how, really.. does one paint cat spit?
i have a ton of these little chinese fishies. it used to be that i would buy one every time i was in quincy market. if i did that, i wouldn't have any more room in my jewelery box for them.

this is my trusty alvin DUX inkwell pencil sharpener. one of the many scores i made when pearl closed and had a 90% off sale. i've gone through more different types of sharpeners than you can imagine, but this one seems to work pretty perfectly. i suppose sharpener pickiness is an "artist thing", but it gets really annoying when a sharpener consistently snaps your leads off. ESPECIALLY if the leads it's eating come from a $4 or $5 pencil. have i convinced you that you need an inkwell sharpener of your own? relax.. pearl wasn't the only place you can get one. amazon will hook you up.

i'm ranting. i'm finished. i drew the sharpener because i loved the color and shape of the glass. if we want to go far enough.. it's a tribute to the awesomeness of alvin. :)

on a fun note. i was flipping though my little moleskine book, and i am halfway finished with the sketchbook. i know that it's because the watercolor paper is thicker.. but i really love the feeling of filling a sketchbook. i have a zillion of these notebooks around with different types of paper in them and i was toying with the idea of starting a different one. like.. instead of starting another watercolor book, maybe i'd jump into colored pencils. the downer with that is my tin of prismacolor pencils is not nearly as portable as my watercolor paints and brushes. plus.. colored pencils are not my favorite medium. not by a damn sight.. but do i force myself into it to try and develop the prismacolor skills? should i start in with the markers? so many choices. i still have half a book to go before i have to make that decision.
