i don't mean to be a whiner about this whole thing.. and i feel like a jerk constantly referencing sickness.. but... i am, or was sick again.
this past weekend stephen was sick as a dog. we'd had hamburgers and he was convinced that since i cooked them medium rare, i had given him food poisoning. i didn't think that was the case since i was fine. he was in bed all weekend not being able to tolerate anything stronger than chicken broth (which he couldn't always keep down) and gingerale. i felt horrible for him.
on monday.. i got up, feeling fine. steve was seemingly cured and off to work. around noon, like i had been hit by a truck, i was as sick as steve was. it's been miserable. this is the first time i've been out of bed since monday afternoon. and i can't even handle the chicken broth.. i've been on an all gingerale diet.
luckily, i have my new iphone (OMGZZZ I LOVE IT!!!!) so i could surf the net from beneath my down comforter.
tomorrow i am going to attempt to get some work done.
i suppose it's nice to know i didn't give steve food poisoning... but damn. i'm really sick of being sick!

the wrong choice
it's about 6 hours since i've had the blackberry curve and i'm ready to chuck it out the damn window. i can't figure out any of the stupid little apps.
i'm bringing it back to the store first thing in the morning and getting the iphone. i knew after about an hour of toying with mine and then about 15 minutes of toying with steve's iphone that i wanted to switch. i should have done it this afternoon. it seems like the blackberry was made for more buisness types and the iphone is for artsy types... i think we all know which catergory i fit in. plus.. i really am a sucker for the sleek, adorable iproducts.
stupid blackberry. what the hell was i thinking?

ellie and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.
yes. a total ripoff of one of my favorite childhood book titles, but today seemed to be the day from hell.
i had to get up around 5-5:30ish to get to brookline for some early morning sitting with eytan and dror. i'm not really a big fan of early mornings like this, but.. they needed me to be there, and so i went. i got out the door late because i couldn't find my wallet. i made it to brookline on pocket change. it seems that this week has been all out of sorts for little eytan. today.... was not one of his better days. on the way home from dropping dror off, he napped. so when we got home.. he didn't want to nap.. but he was still tired, and therefore.. he was cranky. eytan is the type of baby who cries when he is annoyed. it's not a very common trait in babies... and today, he was almost inconsolable. he screamed for hours on end. for a very short period of time... he decided he was going to be happy playing on the floor. when he was finally quiet, my phone rang. it was my mom telling me that she was being admitted into the hospital for an infection, and bedsores that were developing into blisters. they want to hook her up to an IV with antibiotics and try to get her infection under control. because of all of this... she can't walk. it's not good stuff for her.
after all of eytans misery.. his gram was supposed to pick the pair of them up so i could get to hubba. she was late. before hubba..my first objective was to get back to somerville with some requested gingerale for steve who has been struck down by some sort of stomach bug. he's as sick as a dog. after going to somerville, i went BACK to cambridge where suzi was manning hubba hubba alone while sick. she was alone because denise was too sick to make it into work. with suzi sick and me exhausted from sleep deprivation and one hell of a headache.. we were not terribly high functioning workers today. when there weren't customers in the store... we were sitting side by side at the counter with our heads down.. mostly talking about how miserable we both were. some regulars who we find obnoxious came through.. we kind of blew them off... we were supposed to close at 8, but by 7:15 suzi had had it. we closed. i met up with amber and ben for a nice dinner. out.. really one of the only bright spots in my day. tomorrow, we are going to ikea.. and i believe i am getting a new phone this weekend. i'm leaning towards the blackberry. a shiny, fancy, red one.
for now.. it's 10:30 and i am going to bed before my day gets any worse.

adventures in babysitting
it's been one hell of a crazy week. i can't remember the last time i got up so early.. tomorrow will be my marathon!
so.. i've been working with an agency called "parents in a pinch" to kind of get me out of the house illustration wise, and also to make a little of extra money. i've worked with 3 families so far, and they've all been a whirlwind.
family #1: anjelli (3.5) and josh (1): my first job with PiaP. 2 great kids. anjelli has got to be the smartest little girl i've ever met. at just 3.5 she put together an 84 piece puzzle of the united states. not only did she do an AMAZING job, she also read the states as she was putting it together. we also had a blast making paper bag puzzles. her little brother josh, poor guy, was just getting over some sort of stomach bug.. he was almost inconsolable. but he was the type of miserable where he would try to be his plain cheery self through his misery.. i felt so bad for the little guy.
family #2: eytan(1), dror(3), and lev(6): a really cool and interesting family. also kinda neat to meet kids with untraditional names :) i almost never see lev. but i've worked with the family 3 times this week and i must say, these kids are awesome. i spend most of my time with eytan. he is an interesting little fellow and probably the strudiest baby i've ever met. he's a real bruiser. and one of the interesting things is that he pretty much only cries when he's annoyed. i've never met a baby that did that. his older brother, dror, is funny. he loves to do puzzles and read books. i must have read him almost 15 books the first afternoon i met him. i hope this is a family i get to work with more.
family #3: cecelia (9 months): cute as a button. she's just days away from figuring out the whole crawling thing. she loves to grab my fingers and pull herself up to a stand. she has big soulful brown eyes, chubby cherub cheeks, and long long eyelashes. spending 2 afternoons with her was a breeze.
i am also excited about this weekend.. not only is my sister amber coming (YESSSSS!) but stephen is going to get my my birthday present early... either and iphone or a blackberry. being the electronics freak i am, i can't decide which one to get... it's making me crazy!!!
short blog tonight... i need to get up at 5:30 tomorrow morning to get to brookline!!!

operation BRR
it was a completely amazing weekend. it was a rare occasion that i was not named as the arts and crafts gal... but this weekend i was a kitchen witch. a truly perfect role for a polish girl. i was cooking to keep 60 people warm and teaming with energy in the cold weather. it was awesome. i think the main hit was the dinner i made on saturday night.. my mom's spaghetti meat sauce.. they also had salad and garlic bread... but the sauce was the real hit.
i was a little apprehensive after i had received the program information telling me that we were going to be sleeping outside. i was near panicked when i read the weather report telling me that it was going to be -20 with a chance of snow.. but i decided to take the challenge and bring lots of warm blankets (a twin down comforter, two queen down comforters, a fleece tie blanket, and two little microfiber blankets to be exact).. i also found a fleece sleeping bag liner at target. along with lots of warm bedding.. i brought enough layers to keep everyone that came warm.
i had planned on building a shelter like the girls, but being in the kitchen for most of the day meant that i was destined for a tent. s'ok. i love those little pink pop tents. they're so cute!
my tent in main camp... nestled under the flagpole..
my nest of down comforters and sleeping bag. (taken the next morning as i was getting up.... i didn't actually sleep with snow in my tent.) it was SO warm.. i almost didn't want to get up in the morning. my only complaint was that i accidentally set myself up to sleep with my head in a slight downhill position.. and i woke up with a slight headache and a little bit of odd puffiness in my face. all in all... sleeping was fantastic.

the most interesting part of the night was when it started snowing... i remember stirring a little when i heard the snowflakes hitting my tent... and i remember waking up in the morning wondering why it was so dark and why the hell my tent was so close to my face.. it was also about that time that i heard hans walking around to the other shelters checking on the girls.. she was asking them "are you guys warm?".... "do you know that you're covered in like, 2 inches of snow?!" their answers were all giggly yes's. it was then that i reached up and shook the snow off my tent.. completely explained the light and space issues.
camp was so beautiful in all of the snow. i can't wait to go back in 2 weeks for the clean-up with the skillsUSA alumni... and then february will be packed with 2 or 3 program weekends.. i'm SO looking forward to "chef boyar brae".
i think my only downer this weekend was that i might have caught something from one of the girls. this seems to be the winter of sickness for me. since before christmas.. i've only NOT been sick for 2 or 3 days at a time. this time i just have a stuffy nose and a sore throat. i either caught something or breathing the cold air all night irritated my system. i dunno... whatever it is.. i'm sick of being sick.

blast from the past
i recently got a message from a high school friend who i hadn't seen or spoken to in years. he asked me about a band and did i still have the tape somewhere.
i was in a little bit of retro mind twist i had.. i started thinking about them. i was 16.. and it was my first concert. it was in this club that was the size of a shoebox, and was located in the plaza where the stop and shop and k-mart were located. it was not a hip place. but, i was 16, the club was all ages, and they were a crappy little ska/punk band that i loved. their name was "wank". terrible name. i did go looking for the tape (no cd's yet), and i didn't find it.. however.. i did find them on itunes. it's terrible and awesome all at the same time. i gave them another listen after 10+ years of having forgotten about them... they're still terrible, but i still really love it.
on another musical note... i think i have a new love for the band travis. i never really gave them alot of attention until i saw this video of an interpretation by one of my favorite comedians, demitri martin. the video was AWESOME.. so is the song :)

go sleep in the snow? SURE!
yes. it's program weekend time! operation BRR will be taking full effect this saturday at CBB.
this one is going to be... well it's going to be something.
do you have any idea what it's like to sleep outside, in january, in the ever-so-chilly mountains of the berkshires? neither do i. but come sunday morning i should have a pretty decent report and hopefully some fun pictures.
bubbles and i have discussed it thoroughly, our plan of attack is to get an air mattress so we're not on the ground. cover it with a down comforter, get on the mattress in our sleeping bags while wearing LOTS of layers, hats, hoodies, mittens, socks and anything else we can wear and still be able to get into the bags. and then cuddle like polar bears for warmth under yet another down comforter. we think it's a pretty good plan.
all in all, i'm pretty excited.. even though it's going to be a bit of a crazy weekend.

mm mm good... except, not the campbell's way.
when i don't feel well... there are 2, maybe 3 things that i find comforting. tuna wiggle (mom's recipe, strange name... creamy and delicious) and my grammy's/mom's chicken soup. i've been feeling crappy since just before we went to NJ. those few warm days triggered allergies, then chas got me REALLY sick... i'm just now starting to get over that yet now am stricken down again by things i don't really feel like blogging about.
while grocery shopping, i noticed they had roaster chickens on sale... i decided to buy one and make soup. not only is the soup itself warm and comforting.. but the process isn't too bad either. you get 2 dinners (and LOTS of leftovers) from one bird! i love making the stock right from the chicken rather than using the boxed stuff.. chopping the veggies is somewhat therapeutic, and then ripping a chicken apart for all the good stuff is GREAT for relieving tension. oh.. it also makes my house smell like soup.
now... the soup is done.. and i plan on staying in bed with my heating pad, soup, and lots of bad tv until i feel better.

i'm sorry.. can you repeat that?
if you're asking me... i probably can't. ugh. i hate getting sick.
right now it's exactly what i am. as nice as he is.. i'm blaming chas.
one of the stipulations for going to nerdcon, is that you not be sick. the hosts, josh and jill, have two preemie babies who are really susceptible to illnesses due to their underdeveloped lungs. one of the guys who came to nerdcon.. started feeling bad on the way up. by the end of nerdcon, he was coughing and sneezing all over the place while proclaiming the fact that he felt bad. not only did he maybe get the babies sick... but steve and i are now sick as dogs... i got it worse.. i always do. not only is my head all stuffy and my throat sore... but my voice is almost completely gone. when i talk i sound like a cracked voice pre-pubescent boy. i'm actually a little pissed about it. like i said... nice guy, but kind of a douche for staying at nerdcon once he knew he was sick.
since we've gotten back, i've done almost nothing but sleep. i went to bed last night around 9:30 and didn't get up till almost 3 this afternoon. which another HUGE reason i hate getting sick. when it hits me, i go down hard. most of my physical energy is drained and i lose track of time. i mustered up the energy (and rain for backup) to go grocery shopping. i got a roaster chicken and LOTS of veggies (i was crazy disapointed not to be able to find alphabet noodles.. i settled for stars) and pasta for homemade chicken soup. i love the smell that fills my house when i make it. first roasted chicken... then the smell of the broth forming. so yummy.
saturday was amazing. after taking and packing enough dayquill i ventured out to western MA for the girl scout cookie kickoff at the hadley mall. i spent 3 hours painting faces with B.B., puc, p'nut and elizabeth.. it was really nice. i also stocked my freezer with 5 boxes of girl scout cookies. i'm hoping they will last till at least till the end of spring. they're like a rare and delicious treat.. so irrisitable! i was hoping to feel up to the task of venturing up to camp to work on repairs and whatnot... maybe next week.
blah. hopefully i will feel good enough to make it to the gym 4 or 5 times this week.

the perfect green dress
new years eve. 09 was about as exciting as 08. we happened to be stopped for coffee at the joyce kilmer rest stop on the new jersey turnpike when the hour flipped. soon after that we drove through new york... so i guess i could say that i was in new york for new years eve. the plan was to stay at josh's house for new years and then come home... but we were starting to feel a little under the weather since someone at nerdcon was sick... so we came home early. not to mention i was going to turn into a homicidal maniac if i had to spend one more night with steve on that air matress. i ended up sleeping alot of the days we were in jersey away because i was so tired after a night of tossing, turning, and threatening to murder steve if he didn't get on his side of the air matress.
today i spent all day in bed under my down comforter watching tv shows on demand.. i also probably watched way too much bad reality tv. i only got up to play on the internet or get cereal. it was a fabulous day.
one of the things besides my bed i was excited to come home to was my old navy delivery. i am constantly on the look for clothing that i like. i am very picky about colors and designs on things (which is one of the reasons i love woot.. SUCH good t-shirts)
just after christmas.. i found an amazing looking dress. it's a kelly green, and i was hoping the cut would be just right... it turns out.. it was! the color is beautiful and vibrant and the cut is even more perfect that i hoped it would be. i cannot wait to wear it out sometime. it's not often i get so excited about clothing... but damn.
